1. In a cool place
In a room facing north, most plants cannot obtain sunlight if they are far away from the window. Now, they can only maintain bright light and can only cultivate some shade tolerant foliage plants, including common plants such as tiger skin orchid, evergreen, turtle back bamboo, one leaf orchid, and green lily. In such a position, the illuminance is usually between 500 and 2500 lux.
2. Low light environment
A low light environment is easy to understand. In clear weather, the natural light around 3-5 meters next to the east facing window is considered a low light environment.
In low light environments, most indoor plants grow well, even if there is not too much sunlight. There are many such plants, including the common money tree, Dracaena sanderiana, fortune tree, happiness tree, etc.
In such an environment, the illuminance is usually between 2500 and 10000 lux.
3. Bright scattered light
On windowsills with more scattered light, plants such as dendrobium, butterfly orchid, gentlemanly orchid, and crab claw orchid can be planted.
Bright scattered light is usually only reflected through windows in rooms facing south, which belongs to bright scattered light. In such an environment, most indoor plants grow very vigorously, and their growth rate will be relatively good. A small number of shade tolerant flowering plants have the opportunity to breed flowers, including the common African violet, Cape primrose, lipstick chlorophytum comosum, and Anthurium andraeanum.
At the south facing windowsill, the illumination is usually between 10000 to 20000 lux.
4. Direct light
Direct light is also easy to understand, which means that on some balconies, one can receive more direct sunlight every day. For example, on balconies facing south or east, there are no windows or other objects blocking the area, and the intensity of light is approximately 20000 to 50000 lux.
Most flowering plants can be grown in this direct light environment. Even things like pine peonies, roses, triangular plum blossoms, or hibiscus flowers can grow well and even maintain a state of frequent flowering.
5. The sunlight through the window is not as direct as the outdoor light
Just like us ordinary people standing under clouds and filtering through the clouds, these rays of light are also called scattered light. Similarly, the sunlight reflected through the branches and leaves of trees under the shade is also considered scattered light, and the intensity of this sunlight will be greatly reduced.
Similarly, having glass insulation in windows can result in the loss of some light and heat. On windows facing different directions, different plants can be planted. On window sills facing north, it is necessary to plant some shade tolerant foliage plants, such as tiger skin, turtle back bamboo, bird’s nest fern, ornamental bamboo taro, and green apple.
On the south facing windowsill, there will be more sunlight intensity and longer exposure time, and even succulent plants, cactus plants, or other semi shade tolerant flowers that can bloom can be grown.
Before taking care of potted plants, we need to understand their growth habits in advance. Understanding their lighting requirements, whether they prefer scattered light or direct light, all of these need to be understood clearly.
Understanding these basic information can help us keep plants healthier, improve their appearance, and even produce more beautiful flowers
